Science Olympiad — Tips for Competition

Tips for Success

READ THE RULES FOR YOUR EVENT VERY CAREFULLY Make sure to read every single bullet point, understand what to expect on tournament day, etc.

UNDERSTAND THE SAFETY GUIDELINES You can get points deducted for failing to follow the safety guidelines, which includes wearing lab appropriate clothing, goggles, aprons/lab coats, etc.

BE FAMILIAR WITH THE ASSESSED TOPICS Take as many practice tests as possible, and write down the things that you still need to learn.

MAKE THE WRITING IMPLEMENTS WELL ORGANIZED Organize the pages by topics or a similar structure so that it's easy to find information during the event.

BRING AS MANY LAB EQUIPMENT AS POSSIBLE Look over the lab equipment list for your event and try to gather as many as possible as not having these will be a disadvantage. Try asking the chemistry teachers at your school to see if you can borrow them.

START PREPPING FOR YOUR EVENT AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE There will certainly be topics that you have never seen before, so it's a good idea of start early so you can maximize the time you have to prepare for your tournaments.
